Au Pair

 
To apply as an au pair you need to have:

  • Child care experience other than your own family, with contactable written references.
  • The required extent of your hands on childcare experience will vary depending on the type of au pair job you are applying for. For example:  

a.           If you seek a full day au pair position you will need to have the relevant childcare experience to justify working with babies from 3 months old and earning a higher salary.
b.          If you are seeking an afternoon au pair position with children older than 8 years you need to be well educated and be able to assist with homework and have high standards with regards to education.
c.            If you seek a morning position you will need to be very experienced with young ones as morning jobs are for under 3 year olds, including babies of 3 months and up.

  • A valid South African driver's license with a clean record.
  • A valid First Aid/CPR Certificate is essential if you are going to work with children under 10 years of age. It is advisable to obtain a first aid certificate to work with all ages. You can complete a course in your area with a registered course provider. See some contact numbers under Useful Info.
  • Your own children-safe reliable vehicle to use whilst on the job.
  • Child care courses or degrees in Early Childhood Development, Education or Psychology aren’t essential but are a huge advantage.
  • Qualities:  a special love and enthusiasm for children.
  • A desire to get really involved and engage with the children in your charge - 'getting down on the floor or in the pool with the kids' having fun and being loving.
  • Other qualities like a friendly, loving personality, commitment, honesty, reliability, trustworthiness, sensibility, patience and punctuality.
  • You need to be able to take initiative in all situations from emergencies to organising activities and running the children’s daily lives.
  • Be in Good Health
  • Have no Criminal Record

Documentation you are required to bring with you when you come in for an interview;

  • A Copy of your C.V. – an add-on detailing all your childcare experience is advised if not in your cv
  • 2 I.D. size photos (for our office use)
  • A copy of any relevant child care related certificates or courses you have completed.

Baby Specialist

A Baby Specialist is a full day Professional Au Pair who is hired to care for newborns from as little as a few days old in a sole-charge capacity.

Someone hired as a baby specialist might still remain with the family until the child goes to school but the focus of their being hired is their highly professional baby expertise.
To apply as a Baby Specialist you need to:

  • Absolutely adore babies – so much so that your face lights up at the mere mention of a baby!
  • Loads of New Born Child care Experience other than your own family, with written, contactable references.
  • A valid First Aid/CPR Certificate is essential.
  • Your own children-safe reliable vehicle to use whilst on the job.
  • Child care certificate in Educare, Early Childhood Development, etc not essential if you have plenty of baby care experience with references, but are a huge advantage.
  • Qualities:  a loving, warm patient personality with a real love and enthusiasm for babies / children.
  • Other qualities like patience, commitment, honesty, reliability, trustworthiness, sensibility and punctuality.
  • A desire to get really involved in educating the little ones in your charge– stimulate, talk, sing, dance and ‘show the world’.
  • You need to be able to take initiative in all situations from emergencies to organising activities and running the children’s daily lives.
  • Be in Good Health
  • Have no Criminal Record

Special Needs / Educational or Learner Facilitator

As part of Inclusive Education in our mainstream school system, there is a demand for facilitators to accompany individual students with special needs, learning or behaviour difficulties in the classroom on a daily basis. The hours are normally for the mornings to 1pm or with older children until 2.30 / 3pm.
The Facilitator’s role is to support, guide and assist the pupil towards reaching their potential and independence. The facilitator is often required to be the scribe as well as adapt class work to suit the pupil.

 

  • Child care experience other than your own family, with written, contactable references.

Tutor

Tutors visit the homes of students on a ‘one-on-one’ basis that need support in their learning. This can be for general homework, exam preparation, to develop good studying techniques, projects or specific subjects.

The subjects the most in demand are: Maths, Science and Afrikaans. Other languages, business subjects and geography and biology are also in demand. You might be contracted for an hour or two every day or bi or tri- weekly. Some contracts are just for the short term – for example for the period before exam time or long term as in for the year.
To apply as a tutor you need to have:

  • Child care experience other than your own family, with written, contactable references – preferably tutoring as well.
  • Be strong academically, having achieved very high marks / distinctions in matric. Be a university student with a strong academic record of achievement.
  • Have excellent study methods and a passion for learning.
  • A valid South African driver's license with a clean record.
  • A valid First Aid/CPR Certificate is essential if you are going to work with children under 10 years of age. It is advisable to obtain a first aid certificate to work with all ages.   • Student towards an appropriate Degree or Degrees in Teaching, Education, Sciences etc.
  • Ability to develop a special connection with older children and teenagers – mentoring.

Night Nurses

Night Nurses work on assignments for short or long term periods varying from a few days to 6 months plus to care for newborns or to assist parents with little ones with disrupted sleep patterns.
To apply as a Night Nurse you need to have:

  • Absolutely adore babies – so much so that your face lights up at the mere mention of a baby!
  • Loads of New Born Child care Experience other than your own family, with contactable references.
  • Hands-on experience as a night or maternity nurse. Also experience with setting up routines and sleep routines
  • A valid First Aid/CPR Certificate is essential.
  • Your own children-safe reliable vehicle to use whilst on the job.
  • Qualities:  a loving, empathetic, warm and patient personality with a real love and enthusiasm for babies / children.
  • Other qualities like patience, commitment, honesty, reliability, trustworthiness, sensibility, respectful and punctuality.
  • You need to be able to take initiative in all situations from emergencies to organising activities and running the children’s daily lives.
  • Be in Good Health
  • Have no Criminal Record

Babysitter

During the first part of 2009 we will be offering a value-added service to both sets of our signed-up clients to connect with each other via the website to arrange babysitting amongst them.
You can only sign up as a babysitter if you are already signed up with Au Pair At Home and want to earn some extra income.
